Ryan Salami & Caroline Ellison recently got their prison sentences reduced. Both FTX executives were found guilty of participating in the well-known cryptocurrency scam.
Their former employer, Sam Bankman-Fried, former CEO of FTX, was the key culprit in the scam. This sentence shorting happened due to their cooperation with the prosecution and good behavior in the prison.
The new release date for Ryan Salami is March 1, 2031, as a result of this reduction. April 2032 was his previous scheduled release date.
On the contrary, Bankman-Fried’s former girlfriend Ellison got a discount of 3 months in her sentence. Her previous release time was on October 2026, which has now shifted to July 20, 2026.
Before its collapse, FTX, created by Sam Bankman-Fried, was a prominent cryptocurrency exchange. The exchange was well-known for its standard safety and security and boasted several celebrity endorsers.
This platform crashed in 2022 when consumers withdrew their funds. The basis for the withdrawal was rumors concerning FTX’s suspicious ties to Alameda Research. The allegations were made regarding the misuse of funds. Bankman was found diverting customer funds to Alamada Research.
He made this diversion while raising $1.8 Billion from investors. This incident also thrashed the image of FTX as a safe, responsible crypto asset trading platform.
At the time, SBF was the CEO of FTX, and his girlfriend, Caroline Ellison, managed Alameda Research. That was SBF’s privately held cryptocurrency hedge fund. He established it before the formation of FTX.
This scandal created a ruckus in the crypto market. That followed the arrest of many FTX executives. Nishad Singh, Ryan Salame, Caroline Ellison, and Bankman-Fried were detained immediately for criminal fraud.
Sam Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years in prison. There is currently no scheduled release date. FTX executives Salame & Ellison were sentenced to 7.5 years and 2 years, respectively.
Ellison entered a guilty plea in December 2022 and was given a two-year prison sentence in September. In November, she started her sentence. Salame began his conviction in October.
Attorneys for Rayan Salame first requested an 18-month prison sentence. For this, they argued that Ryan wasn’t part of SBF’s innermost circle. Also, he was unaware of the crimes in this case.
At first, federal prosecutors sought to sentence the former FTX executive to five to seven years in prison. Judge Lewis A. Kaplan, however, imposed a 90-month extension.
Cooperative and good behavior are the main reasons behind the shortening sentences of FTX executives. Inmates in the federal prison system may be eligible for sentence reductions if they participate in rehabilitation programs and behave well.
Ellison’s collaboration with the jurisdiction could be the reason for her early release. She was a key witness in the criminal prosecution against her ex-boyfriend, Sam Bankman-Fried.
She informed the court: “He was the head of Alameda, then FTX. He directed me to commit these crimes with Gary Wang and Nishad Singh.”
Nishad Singh, who was arrested with the other FTX executives, did the same. He sided with the prosecution, testified against Bankman-Fried, and evaded prison.
